At a kids' party, simple wins. Kids eat small amounts spread across the party and drink a lot while they play. Many fill up on cake, so the main food can stay light.

The amounts below assume cake plus a simple main like pizza. Ask parents about allergies before you shop.

Food Amounts per Child (Chart for 10, 15 and 20 Kids)

Pizza slice counts come from a kids' party venue that cuts 15-inch pizzas into 12 slices. Adults usually eat about 2 slices each.

Food Amounts per Child (Chart for 10, 15 and 20 Kids)
Item Per child 10 kids 15 kids 20 kids
Pizza slices, ages 3–5 1 10 slices 15 slices 20 slices
Pizza slices, ages 6–7 1–2 10–20 slices 15–30 slices 20–40 slices
Pizza slices, ages 8–12 2–3 20–30 slices 30–45 slices 40–60 slices
Cake or cupcakes about 1.5 pieces 15 23 30
Chips and snacks about 1.75 oz about 1.1 lb about 1.65 lb about 2.2 lb
Juice (about 2 hours) 10–17 fl oz 0.8–1.3 gal 1.2–2 gal 1.6–2.6 gal

With 8-slice pizzas the slices are bigger, so kids eat fewer of them. Water comes on top of the juice.

How Much Food per Child?

Pizza is the easiest main to plan: 1 slice per child for ages 3 to 5, 1 to 2 for ages 6 to 7 and 2 to 3 for ages 8 to 12, based on 12-slice pizzas. Count about 2 slices per adult. Kids often eat less than planned, so order modestly and keep a frozen pizza as backup.

For cake, plan about 1.5 pieces or cupcakes per child, and about 1.75 oz of chips or other snacks.

Easy Kids' Party Food by Age

Kids like familiar food. The simpler the menu, the more time is left for games.

Ages 3 to 5

Hot dogs, mac and cheese, fruit and veggie sticks. Small portions and nothing spicy.

Ages 6 to 9

Make-your-own mini pizzas, sliders or wraps. When kids top their own food, the meal becomes part of the fun.

Ages 10 to 12

A taco bar, nachos with dip, burgers or oven fries.

Cake and Sweets

One cake is usually enough, plus one or two small treats. Cupcakes save cutting and plates. Remember candles and a lighter.

Drinks for Kids

Water is the base, plus juice. Plan about 10 to 17 oz of juice per child for a two-hour party, plus water. Caffeinated drinks like cola or iced tea aren't suitable for younger kids. Name labels on cups save washing up.

Allergies and School Treats

Ask parents about allergies when you send the invitations. If you bring treats to school or daycare, check the rules first, since many have policies on sweets and nuts. Fruit skewers or individually wrapped treats are easy to share.
